Understanding your prepayment meter display

Due to the coronavirus outbreak, we've made some temporary changes to help if you're on a prepayment meter.
Prepayment meter display messages
What you see on your prepayment meter display will depend on whether it's a gas or electricity meter. The sections below explain what the different codes and screens mean.
Gas prepayment meters
To switch through each of the information displays on your meter:
- Take your card out of the meter.
- If the screen is blank, press red button A – it’ll then display 'for gas'.
- Press and hold red button A until you hear a beep.
- Let go and you’ll see '00' on the screen.
- Keep pressing button 'A’ to go through each of the screens.
To see where the credit is going when you’ve topped up your meter, take a look at the displays '00' to '03'.
Here are some of the most useful displays - they may vary depending on what meter you have.
Display number | What this means |
---|---|
00 | How much credit you last put on your meter |
01 | How much of your last top up was put towards any outstanding debt on your meter |
02 | How much of your last top up was taken to repay any emergency credit you've used |
03 | How much of your last top up has gone onto your gas supply |
The amounts from displays 01, 02 and 03 will add up to the amount shown in display 00.
Display number | What this means |

10 | Price per unit of gas |
17 | Daily standing charge - collected at 2am every day |
You’ll need to have your card in your meter to see the following displays:
Display number | What this means |
---|---|
25 | The minimum debt repayment that will be taken in a week |
26 | The maximum debt repayment that will be taken in a week |
27 | The amount of debt to be repaid. This’ll go down each week if you add enough credit to your meter |
Electricity prepayment meters
You can switch through each of the displays on your meter by pressing the blue button on the front. Each display has a letter or number, depending on what type of meter you have.
Displays when you have credit on your meter:
Display number | What this means |
---|---|
A or 1 | How much credit you have on your meter, eg. £4.50. |
888.888 | This is a test display only to be used by an engineer. |
E or 3 | How much credit has been put on your meter since it was last reset by an engineer. |
F or 4 | How much standing charge and debt (if applicable) your meter will collect each week. |
G | The total number of units recorded by your meter since it was manufactured. |
H or 5 | Your meter reading. |
I or 6 | Your price per unit of electricity. |
To see the following display, your key will need to be in your meter.

R or 7 | How much emergency credit your meter will let you have, if you need it. |
Economy 7 displays
Economy 7 is a special tariff with two different unit rates (a day rate and a cheaper night rate), usually used by people with night storage heaters.
Here are some other displays you’ll see if you have an Economy 7 meter:
Display number | What this means |
---|---|
C | The time and current rate you’re being charged, eg., at 2pm it will show you the day rate, and at 2am it will show you the night rate. |
D | The date and current rate you’re being charged. |
H or 5 | Your meter reading for your day usage. |
I or 6 | Your price per unit for your day rate. |
J | Your meter reading for your night usage. |
K | Your price per unit for your night rate. |
