What is the Warm Home Discount?

The government and energy suppliers are running a scheme to help those at risk from fuel poverty in England, Scotland and Wales get a rebate from their electricity bill.

If you are eligible, the Warm Home Discount will offer you a benefit of £140 (inclusive of VAT) against your electricity bill in 2020/21.

How does the Warm Home Discount work?

As a leading energy company, we understand the effect rising prices can have on customers who may need additional support.

The Warm Home Discount scheme is there to help people who may be struggling to keep up with their energy payments. It provides an annual rebate to the electricity bills of UK homes that could be at risk of fuel poverty.

Some customers, known as the Core Group, are automatically entitled to a rebate under the government scheme. Others, known as the Broader Group, are entitled to a rebate if they get certain benefits, like Income Support, or meet other criteria, such as having a low household income.

Am I eligible for the Warm Home Discount?

Some customers are automatically entitled to the Warm Home Discount and will be contacted by the government directly.

But even if your circumstances mean you’re not in this Core Group, we still want to help. Check to see if you fall into the Broader Group below, as you may still qualify for a Warm Home Discount.

You may be part of the Core Group if on the qualifying date you were getting the:

  • Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit (even if you get Savings Credit as well)

If you are, the Department for Work and Pensions will contact you directly over the winter of 2020/21.

If you haven’t been contacted by the end of December 2020, but think you do you qualify, you should call the government’s Warm Home Discount phone line on 0800 7310214, Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm.

The criteria has been updated. Please check below if you are eligible for npower’s Broader Group Warm Home Discount:

You’ll need to provide us with a declaration that you meet the Warm Home Discount eligibility criteria that we’ve mentioned above, and you may also need to give us written evidence before you can get your rebate.

Make sure you apply as early as you can, because the scheme may close once we have reached the limit of people we can help each year.

Do I need to apply for the Warm Home Discount scheme every year?

Yes, you need to reapply each year and you’ll also need to provide us with another declaration if you are in the Broader Group.

How will I find out if my Warm Home Discount application has been successful?

You will either receive confirmation as part of completing the application or a confirmation by email or in writing.

When is the Warm Home Discount paid?

The rebate should be applied to your bill (or sent as a voucher if you are a prepayment customer) by the end of March 2021.

How will I receive my discount?

Prepayment customers - As a prepayment customer, you will receive your £140 rebate as a Post Office voucher, which you can then take to any branch of the Post Office and use to top-up your prepayment key.

Credit customers - You will receive your £140 discount as a line item on your bill. If you receive a bill close to the payment period during March or April 2021 which doesn't show your rebate you will receive it on your following bill.
