Mr John Hunt, Norfolk
Understanding the ECO boiler scheme, boiler grants and replacements
We’ve installed thousands of boilers across the UK for eligible customers as part of the government’s Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme since 2013.
You might also hear of terms like ‘boiler grant’ to describe the scheme.
You can see if you’re eligible for a free or subsidised boiler in minutes by completing our online application form. If you are and you’d like to progress this application further you can choose whether or not you want us to pass your information to our trusted provider 0800 Repair* who may be able to help you further.
If you want to read more on what the government has to say about the ECO Scheme, visit the GOV.UK website. Please note boilers are currently funded by the Affordable Warmth part of the ECO scheme.

Boiler types
Combi boilers
Combi (or combination) boilers are the UK's most popular type for gas central heating and domestic hot water. As with other variants they provide heat to your radiators, but differ by only heating hot water for your taps on demand (when you turn it on or run a hot shower). This means you're not keeping a full cylinder of hot water heated if only a small amount of hot water is required, and you're saving energy. They also don't need extra space for a cylinder and they deliver water to your taps at mains pressure, which can make for a more powerful shower.
Combi boilers at a glance:
- Instant hot water at mains pressure
- No need for a separate hot water cylinder
- Available in a range of sizes to suit your home, including ultra- compact models for flat
- Recommended by the Energy Saving Trust Ideal for households with low hot water demand
System boilers
System boilers are particularly suitable for heating larger houses that use more hot water - (i.e. houses that have more than one bathroom). It pumps hot water to the radiators and cylinder (usually in the airing cupboard or loft). And you can run more than one tap at the same time.
System boilers at a glance:
- Let's you run more than one hot water tap at the same time
- Economical to run
- Key components (like expansion vessel and modulating pump) are built-in
- Available in different sizes, but particularly well-suited to larger homes
- Recommended by the Energy Saving Trust
Conventional boilers
Conventional/ Heat only boilers are very similar to System boilers as both require a separate hot water cylinder. However, certain components are external to the boiler (diverter valve, pump) and are usually located next to the cylinder within the airing cupboard. Installing a new heat-only boiler in your home can be a straightforward job as most can be added to existing systems, making them a very versatile option, and they're easy to use.
Heat-only boilers at a glance:
- In certain circumstances can be simple to install
- Compact designs
- Let's you run more than one hot water tap at the same time
- Available in a range of sizes
- Can replace any existing heat-only boiler
- Recommended by Energy Saving Trust
