npower Foundation

The npower Foundation charity was set up to help as many people as possible benefit from fuel crisis support so fewer people are left without access to energy for the basics.


Currently, the npower Fuel Bank™ works through selected Foodbanks to give emergency Pay As You Go (Pre- Payment) support. It breaks the agonising choice between heat or eat, for those who can’t afford to do both. The scheme makes a huge difference and ensures that they’re not left without access to the basics, such as lighting and heating. and helps:

  • take away one more worry while foodbank clients try to resolve the initial crisis
  • ensure they don’t build up further debt while their crisis is resolved
  • reduce stress and anxiety

The npower Fuel Bank™ helps around 35,000 people every year. Question mark 

But it’s not enough.

Increasing demand for foodbanks and decreasing local authority funding is making this an escalating problem. The npower Fuel Bank™ is currently only helping the tip of the iceberg - a tiny fraction of families who need our help across the UK.

So, the npower Foundation charity was set up to help as many people as possible access crisis support and to widen the reach of Fuel Banks so that fewer people are left without fuel.

About the npower Foundation charity

The npower Foundation is an independent Charitable Incorporated Organisation, registered in England and Wales, number 1175049. It’s independent from npower, but linked to npower.

The npower Foundation vision

“A UK where everyone has access to energy for the basics: heating, cooking and keeping the lights on.”

To get there, we’ll develop sustainable solutions to support homes in ‘fuel crisis’ (unable to afford to top up their Pay As You Go meter) through innovative investments, partnerships and research – starting with widening the availability of Fuel Bank™ support.

In its first year, we hope the npower Foundation will help to:

  • leave fewer people without fuel as a result of self-disconnecting
  • give people in crisis the breathing space to get back on their feet
  • enable more people in crisis to access longer term support and as a result take steps to improve their mental and physical wellbeing.
  • raise awareness of the heat or eat dilemma so that more support is provided to tackle it.

You can support the work of the npower Foundation by making a donation.

  • £10 will cover fuel costs in an average home for around 3 days and will allow Foodbank clients to cook a food parcel from the Foodbank. Question mark
  • £30 provides enough fuel for an average family to light their homes, cook nourishing meals have hot baths for around two weeks over summer. Question mark
  • £49 is how much an average family will spend on fuel over two weeks in the winter. Question mark

Simon Stacey – Managing Director of Home and Business, npower

Simon has overall responsibility for npower’s residential and small business customers across the UK and has been in post since June 2015. Previously Simon was Director of Energy Services at npower from 2010-2015 and has worked in a range of roles including Retail Finance Director July 2008-April 2010 and Group Financial Controller. Simon qualified as a chartered accountant with PWC.

Matthew Cole – Head of Domestic Policy & Social Energy, npower

Matthew is responsible for both the corporate response to evolving public policy plus defining and commissioning services to support npower customers most in need.

Over the last two years, Matthew has redefined npower's charitable projects and partnerships, generating greater business buy-in and advocacy by aligning them alongside npower's main business activities. Recently two of Matthew's key initiatives, the npower Fuel Bank™ (project with the Trussell Trust) and npower's Macmillan Fund have won prestigious awards recognising both their innovative nature and the positive outcomes for clients.

Audrey Gallacher – Director of Retail Energy Supply, Energy UK

Audrey Gallacher is responsible for the teams working on energy retail policy, operations and the Smart meter programme. Her responsibility is helping to ensure consumers remain central in the development and delivery of EUK members' policies and processes. She is committed to representing an energy supply sector that delivers great service and value – and most importantly treats its customers fairly.

Audrey has an extensive background in the energy sector, initially with the regulator Ofgem as Head of Consumer Affairs in Scotland. She moved into energy consumer advocacy in 2000 when she became National Director in Scotland for energywatch, before moving to lead its GB work on company performance, research and advice. More recently, she has held Director of Energy positions with the statutory watchdog, Consumer Futures and at the charity Citizens Advice.
