Biodiversity
Biodiversity is the natural variety of life on earth, encompassing all species of plants and animals. It is being lost at an increasing rate throughout the world as a result of human activity.
We carried out a number of activities over the last year to support our biodiversity framework:
We developed the Biodiversity Action Plans for Fawley and Aberthaw power stations. At Fawley we carried out a number of surveys in partnership with the Hampshire Wildlife Trust (HWT) and HWT were commissioned to provide site management advice and supervision to manage the site in keeping with its surroundings.
We hosted a seminar for businesses in the Swindon area to support the development of a Swindon Biodiversity Action Plan.
Aberthaw Lagoon case study
The saline lagoon at Aberthaw power station is one of only four such habitats in Wales and is the focus for our Biodiversity Action Plan for the site. In 2003, we completed the first full year of the site management plan. Surveys of the site were carried out and work to improve the habitat around the lagoon was undertaken.
We work in partnership with the Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales. Staff volunteering at the power stations sites is an important aspect of the Biodiversity Action Plans.
