Gas safety in your home

Carbon monoxide

Carbon monoxide is a highly poisonous gas that can kill. Appliances that burn fossil fuels, such as gas, can produce carbon monoxide if they have not been properly installed or regularly serviced. All such appliances should be in rooms or locations with adequate ventilation and/or flues. Read more about carbon monoxide.

It is recommended that gas appliances are serviced each year by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Installing a carbon monoxide detector (similar to a smoke alarm) could save your life and is recommended. You should also check any gas appliances for the following problems:

  • Staining, sooting or discolouration around the edge of or on the appliance
  • A yellow or orange flame instead of the normal blue
  • A strange smell when your appliance is working

If you suspect any of the above call the gas emergency helpline on 0800 111 999.
