Macmillan Cancer Support open/close

Macmillan Cancer Support improves the lives of people with cancer through providing practical, medical and financial help as well as pushing for better cancer care.

Our partnership with Macmillan is worth over £3 million. There are currently over 2 million cancer sufferers in the UK with a fifth of these currently living in fuel poverty. Cancer sufferers are twice as likely to be in fuel poverty as anybody else as their income lessens and their bills increase. We work with Macmillan in order to provide them with a service to help them through their illness.

With Macmillan we have developed a specialist fuel management programme as part of our spreading warmth tariff. This specialist programme helps them to:

  • Reduce their bills to less than 10% of their income even if their consumption increases. On average those on the fuel management programme saw consumption of electricity increase by 8% and consumption of their gas by 21%.
  • Manage arrears – if the customer joins the scheme with a debt then we will write that off through the First Step Fund.
  • Make their homes more energy efficient – our home energy efficiency advisors provide face to face advice within our core regions.
  • Get full benefits checks through the Macmillan helpline.

A customer on the programme said: "I think it’s brilliant. The confidence it will give me to be able to put the heating on when I'm cold. You know, I'm already sitting here with the blankets on and I've undergone two bouts of chemotherapy and surgery and I've been freezing, from my bones out, so I think it's a wonderful, wonderful thing."

National Energy Action (NEA) open/close

The NEA is an organisation who promotes energy efficiency services to tackle the heating and insulation problems of low income households. Its target is to eradicate fuel poverty. The government has set a target for eradicating fuel poverty by 2016. We sponsor the NEA on several projects with the main two being:

Winter fuel payment research – this highlights how winter fuel payments are spent and looks at whether the fuel payments are being absorbed into the wider household budget. It will hopefully provide the NEA with the means to expand the payment to a wider range of people.

New fuel payment method –is a research project aimed at finding alternative methods for paying bills that may benefit the fuel poor. Two alternative methods are currently being trialled.

Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) open/close

We work with CAB on its “energy best deal” campaign. CAB work in partnership with Ofgem and various energy companies in order to produce a public awareness campaign. This campaign aims to:

  • Make people aware of fuel savings that can be made through switching and renegotiating with fuel suppliers
  • Provide information about help that can be made available from energy suppliers and the government for people who are struggling to pay their energy bills

This service is delivered through sessions aimed at end service users who can then be pointed in the direction of further help.
