Opportunities at RWE npower
The energy industry faces a number of challenges in the future and ensuring we have people with the right skills and behaviours to drive and fulfil our business strategy is paramount to our success. We consistently invest in the attraction and retention of the wide variety of experience and expertise we need for our complex business. We also continually develop and invest in our employees to respond to the evolving market conditions, as well as identifying and preparing our future leaders for the challenges ahead.
As a business we are committed to guiding and facilitating the development of our people. We offer a range of tailored development opportunities, from the graduate development scheme and general business skills to senior management training and ‘high potential’ programmes. We also design and deliver solutions – such as development centres, coaching, 360° feedback and self-development tools – to assist our managers and people in constructing their personal development plans.
Our Apprenticeship Programme
Our apprenticeships are designed to develop the craftspeople of tomorrow. At the end of December 2012, there were 21 apprentices at various stages on the programme. The scheme combines extensive hands-on experience in the workplace with academic study and a substantial programme of practical skills training courses. At the end of the scheme, our apprentices can gain a BTEC National Certificate in Engineering and Maintenance skills and NVQs (National Vocational Qualifications) at levels 2 and 3.
Our Power Technician Programme
This specially-developed programme, designed to reach EngTech standards, aims to develop future technicians and engineers in the operation and maintenance of our power stations. Now in its third year, it combines a mix of academic study and technical skills training, with specialist competency development and assessment. During their four-year programme, students undertake a Higher National Certificate in Operations Engineering and a broad base of general skills training before following one of the specialist competency development routes of electrical, mechanical, control and instrumentation, operations or renewable. There are currently 29 students on the programme.
Our Graduate Scheme
Our Graduate Scheme recruits and develops potential future leaders who will help to ensure the success of our business. Graduates can join the npower business via a number of schemes including Finance, Engineering, Risk, Business Analysis, HR, Marketing, Sales, Energy Services, Customer Services and Asset Management.
Graduates gain valuable broad experience across the business via multiple placements. Each placement provides them with levels of responsibility with the overall aim that they are able to enter the business in a substantive role, fully equipped with the necessary skills to succeed and drive performance.
To complement their day-to-day experiences, we have developed a high-impact, intensive-development programme for our graduates. This includes technical and soft skills and continual learning throughout their time on the scheme, via assessment, performance management and ‘live’ strategic mini projects. The 2013 cohort of new graduates will attend a refreshed development programme, intended to provide them with blended ‘on-time learning’, coupled with continuous assessment and action-learning periods between interventions.
We currently have 61 graduates on our programme, including those recruited in September 2012. We plan to recruit approximately a further 25 in September 2013.
