Our Assets - managing their impact on the environment

We recognise that our business, especially our generation business, has an impact on the environment. Managing our emissions, water use and by-products and protecting the biodiversity around our sites are important and challenging areas for us.
The environmental impacts of our operations are carefully controlled by strict regulations and our own rigorous environmental management systems (EMS). At RWE npower, we are committed to continuous improvement of our environmental management and performance. This means:

  • maintaining a high level of environmental management that goes beyond compliance;
  • ensuring the efficient use of all our resources;
  • reducing and recycling as much of our by-products as possible.

2011 highlights

Over the last year, we:

  • Received a full environmental permit for our new 2,000MW CCGT Pembroke Power Station, currently under construction;
  • Converted our coal-fired Tilbury Power Station to run on 100% sustainable, renewable biomass;
  • Obtained a permit to upgrade Little Barford Power Station to deliver improvements to output, efficiency and reliability of the power station, whilst reducing emissions;
  • Developed a Corporate Environmental Management System that provides the link between all the individual certified EMS within RWE npower;
  • Started construction on a 3MW Carbon Capture Pilot Plant at our coal-fired station in Aberthaw;
  • Monitored and managed our emissions to land, air and water at all our power stations and reported no major incidents;
  • Reduced, reused and recycled as many by-products as possible;
  • Promoted biodiversity through a series of action plans and local community projects.

It's all part of our commitment to reduce the environmental impacts of our business and engage our employees in environmental management.
