Project overview

The National Trust and npower are working together on a ground breaking partnership that includes:

  • Business supply deal
  • Renewable energy tariff for National Trust supporters www.ntgreenenergy.org.uk
  • Green investment fund to support small scale renewable energy projects at National Trust sites
  • Low Carbon Villages programme.

About the Low Carbon Villages programme
The National Trust owns part, or all, of 60 villages largely made up of tenanted residential properties plus a smaller number of commercial properties such as shops, pubs, offices and community buildings. Generally these buildings are pre 1930s, vernacular and sometimes listed which can pose a significant challenge in introducing effective energy saving measures and small scale renewable energy generation technologies.

But how much of this is down to preconceived ideas about older buildings and their limitations?

There are undoubtedly significant practical barriers to changing behaviours that are easier to address at a community rather than individual scale. This project aims to work with the communities at Wallington and Coleshill to inspire and help them find real, sustainable solutions.

It also seeks to demonstrate what can be achieved directly to visiting public and schools to inspire others to do the same at home and indirectly via the web.
