What is a non-standard electricity meter?

Almost all npower electricity customers have a standard single rate meter or an Economy 7 meter with two rates. A small percentage have non-standard meters (also referred to as Restricted Meters or Complex meters) such as an Economy 10 meter, SuperTariff meter or an Off-Peak meter with an associated 24-hour meter (two meters, two electricity supply numbers.

The type of meter you have in your in your home may depend on if you use gas/oil or electricity to heat your home and water.

Economy 8, 9 or 10 meter? open/close

An Economy electricity meter is a two-rate meter that records all the electricity used in your home at different rates, depending on the time of day.

Economy 8 and Economy 9 open/close

An Economy 8 or 9 meter records the electricity you use on two rates – a ‘day/normal’ rate and a ‘night/low’ rate. The ‘night/low’ rate is cheaper than the ‘day/normal’ rate and covers a period of eight hours for an Economy 8 meter or nine hours for an Economy 9 meter.

Economy 10open/close

An Economy 10 meter also records the electricity you use on two rates. The 10 hours on a ‘low’ rate are typically broken down into seven hours at night and three hours during the day or it may be broken down into three periods – for example five hours overnight, three hours in the afternoon and two hours in the evening.

SuperTariff meter open/close

A SuperTariff is a multi-rate meter that has registers to separately record the electricity you use in your home during the day and night, as well as a ‘Heat’ register which records the electricity used to power a particular space and/or to heat water .

It’ll run alongside an associated 24 hour ‘day/night’ meter, which is likely to be an Economy 7 meter. View our online Economy 7 calculator to see if the amount of energy you use at night usage is suited to Economy 7, or if you could be benefitting from a different type of tariff.

Off-Peak meter open/close

If you’re an Off-Peak customer, you will have two separate meters installed in your home:

  • An Off-Peak meter which usually supplies electricity to a particular space and/or to heat for 8 to 13 hours a day.
  • A separate meter which records all other electricity supplied to your home 24 hours a day

Do I have to have a Restricted Hour Tariff (RHT)? open/close

If you’ve a non-standard electricity meter you don’t have to have a Restricted Hour Tariff, npower Select, a brand within the npower group, offers a range of single-rate tariffs for your non-standard meter.
