Insulate your loft today and save up to £240 a year

As we all know, heat rises. So unless you have loft insulation to prevent it escaping, all of that energy could literally be going through the roof.

The good news is that under the Energy Companies Obligation (ECO) scheme you could qualify for free loft insulation - and you don't even need to be an npower customer to take advantage.

How much money can I save with loft insulation?
Loft insulation is a great way to save money. According to the Energy Saving Trust, having your loft installed to te correct specification, can save you up to £240 per year.

Loft insulation

  • Annual saving £240
  • CO2 saving 1000kg

How thick does loft insulation need to be?
If you have matting insulation, the blanket/roll type of insulation, it’s recommended that your insulation should be a minimum of 250mm.

If you haven’t had your loft insulation installed in the last few years, we recommend that you check its depth as the recommended thickness has changed over the last few years.

How much heat do I actually lose through my roof?
If your roof is not insulated to the correct specification, you may be losing up to 25% of your heat through it.

This means the moment you turn the heating on in a home without sufficient loft insulation, you’re wasting up to 25% of it and just heating the sky.

How do I found out how much loft insulation I have?
To find out how deep your loft insulation is, you will need to go into the loft and push a tape measure or ruler down the side of the insulation until you hit the floor and measure this depth. If the depth is less than 250mm, it is recommended by the Energy Saving Trust that you have it topped up to 250mm or higher.

Frequently asked questions open/close

What is loft insulation?
Loft insulation is very straightforward; it is where you put insulation material between the joists or rafters in your loft to reduce heat leaving through your roof. It acts in the same way as a woolly hat. A woolly hat helps to stop heat from your body escaping through the top of your head. Likewise, the heat in your home will rise but loft insulation will help prevent it all escaping through your roof. Loft insulation usually takes a couple of hours to install. It is simply rolled out and laid flat across the loft floor, between and over the joists if they are visible.

Many lofts have some form of insulation in them, but the key for loft insulation is to have the right amount and to the right specification. If you don’t, what you currently have may be providing no support at all to the energy efficiency of your home and not preventing heat leaving your property.

How much does loft insulation cost?
According to the Energy Saving Trust, the cost of installing loft insulation in a detached home is £395. However, under the government’s ECO scheme, you can get loft insulation installed for free.

How is loft insulation installed?
Loft insulation can be installed easily – and if you’re eligible under the ECO scheme, it’s free . All the installer needs is access to your loft and the ability to move around to lay the insulation.

If the whole loft is boarded, we can still lay the insulation by removing the boarding and if needed, we may be able to move around the things in your loft to lay insulation around them.

It shouldn’t take long as it’s usually straightforward, just a few hours to complete. Then once the loft hatch is closed, it’s all done and you can forget about it – until you start to see the savings on your energy bills.

What is loft insulation made of?
Typically, there are 4 types of loft insulation which may be installed:

Matting - Your typical roll of insulation, usually made up of mineral wool

Loose-fill - Loose material made up of mineral wool and cork which is poured between joists

Blown - Made up of mineral wool and fire resistant fibre, which is blown into specific areas (by professionals only)

Rigid boards – Can be used to insulate walls, floors and ceilings and is commonly made from polystyrene
