Putting our energy into fundraising
No one should have to face cancer alone. At npower, 2014 marks the 10th anniversary of our partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support, and we believe that a decade of support is an occasion to mark. It's a decade that's seen our partnership value grow to £8 million and the making of our joint Fuel Management Programme, a programme that helps thousands of people affected by cancer to manage their energy costs better.
Therefore, we're organising '10 for 10' – ten fundraising challenges that should raise a further £150,000 for Macmillan. Part of the money that's raised will continue to help fund the Macmillan Support Line and Macmillan energy advisers, who refer people affected by cancer who are eligible to our programme, as well as other schemes.
Over the next year, you can follow our employee’s progress in reaching our £150,000 target for Macmillan. The ten events are:
Nearly 100 people joined us for a dip in the North Sea, off Sunderland's South Shields beach.
24-hour team activity to be completed in February – this could be anything!
Teams will be sponsored to complete as many holes as they can within a day to see if they can make the longest day challenge: 72 holes over 20 miles.
Sponsored 10km run, jog or walk for Macmillan in April. We have a minimum fundraising target for participants of £50.
We’ve 36 rowers taking part in this challenge - we have 9 rowing boats, each taking 4 people (2 rowing at any one time).
In June, a 225km cycle, over 3 days, from Whitehaven to Sunderland.
A 17km hike up the highest mountain in the British Isles, standing at 1,344 metres above sea level, which will take us 7-9 hours to conquer in July.
In the summer holidays, this challenge involves the employees, friends and family of npower completing an 8 to 10 hour hike along Hadrian's Wall.
Something extreme for the more daring employees, this test of bravery will take place all over England in October.
And finally, we're keeping the tenth challenge a surprise. The tenth challenge, of the '10 for 10' that marks our tenth anniversary? It’s bound to be good.
Want to find out more about our Fuel Management Programme?
More than one in three of us will get cancer in our lifetime. We know that treatment can result in people feeling the cold more, at a time when you spend more time in your home, and our Fuel Management Programme is designed to help keep those potentially higher heating bills under control.
If you know someone who's been affected by cancer and might need some help managing their energy costs, please call the Macmillan Support Line on 0808 808 00 00. If eligible for the programme, they could save money on their bills, receive assistance with arrears and energy efficiency advice, and have a full benefits check.
