Start saving energy now
Energy is likely to be one of your biggest business costs so our energy saving tips are designed to give you some quick wins, with the potential for you to reduce your costs straight away.
Get everyone onboard
Saving money depends on everyone in your business being energy aware. So why not appoint an 'energy champion' who can monitor energy waste, bring it to everyone's attention and work with colleagues to improve the way things are done? If you're an npower customer, our energy advisers can provide you with booklets, stickers and posters to help you encourage everyone in your business to save energy.
Conduct an energy audit
Take regular energy readings so you can monitor exactly how much business electricity and gas you're using - and you can judge the impact of any energy saving measures you put in place. Understanding any changes in your energy consumption over a given time period will help you develop more energy efficient business processes.
Get an energy monitor
npower can provide a free energy monitor for all its small business customers so you can keep track of the energy you're using in real time. To claim your free monitor, call our energy saving advisers on 0800 975 9805* (free from most landlines) or 0330 100 9992* (included in any 'inclusive minutes' from mobiles).
Encourage all members of staff to be more energy efficient and switch off lights, computers, printers, phone chargers, air conditioning units, extractor fans, kitchen equipment etc. at the end of the day and especially over the weekend. It sounds obvious, but wander round your business after hours and you could be amazed at how much technology is left switched on - all burning the company's money.
How to save on business energy
We have lots of ways that could help you save energy and free up vital cash that can be put to good use elsewhere in your business. See how Baginton Village store is saving energy after an energy audit - show video.
Use energy saving bulbs
Energy saving light bulbs use up to 80% less energy than standard ones and they last a whole lot longer. Count the number of lights you're burning every day and you can see how much you could save.
Fit automatic lighting
Think about installing motion sensitive lighting in areas of your business that aren't used all day, every day - such as corridors, toilets or meeting rooms. If colleagues forget to switch the lights off after them, your sensor will do it automatically.
Turn down the heating
Ever find yourself opening windows or doors because the room you're working in is too hot? Then it pays to turn the heating down. Use reflective radiator panels and avoid placing large desks or sofas in front of radiators to ensure you're getting more heat into the room and save energy – you may be able to turn the thermostat down another notch.
Turn up the air conditioning
You shouldn't really need air conditioning until the temperature reaches around 23°C. And once it has been turned on, make sure windows and doors are kept closed so it works efficiently.
Buy yourself an Eco Kettle
The company kettle is used many times a day so invest in an Eco Kettle that is more energy efficient. You should also encourage colleagues to boil only the water they need. Over filled kettles are a huge waste of energy and money.
