what npower does
Well, where do we start? We may be known for supplying electricity and gas, but there's a lot more to us than that.
We are a leading integrated UK energy company and are part of the RWE Group, one of Europe’s leading utilities. We serve around 6.6 million customer accounts and produce more than 10% of the electricity used in England and Wales.
We supply electricity and gas to residential and business customers through our retail business, npower, and we operate and manage a flexible portfolio of coal, oil and gas-fired power stations. We also manage a portfolio of cogeneration plant and, through RWE Power International, we sell our expertise in power generation to third parties.
In the UK, RWE is also at the forefront of producing energy through renewable sources. RWE npower renewables, part of RWE Innogy, leads the UK wind power market and are also leaders in hydroelectric generation.
Investment in new power stations
Over the next few years, a large number of the UK’s existing coal, oil and nuclear power stations are due to close as they reach the end of their operational lives or are unable to achieve the latest environmental standards.
To address this, we’ve embarked upon a large scale building programme of new generation infrastructure and are planning new-build investments which could amount to around £1 billion each year over the next 10 years. It’s important that we do not rely on one source, so our strategy is to move to a diverse and sustainable mix of power stations, including gas, renewables, cleaner coal and nuclear.
