On 1st February 2012 we cut gas prices for all domestic customers on standard tariffs by 5%. For an average customer on our Standard tariff this will cut their annual energy bill by £38.
Paul Massara, Chief Commercial Officer at RWE npower, explains the change announced on 13th Jan:
"It's obviously no coincidence that several energy companies have announced price reductions this week and we do not apologise for joining them. We are now at a point where costs, at least in the short term, can justify a price cut and we want to make sure that npower customers always get competitive deals. Our reduction in prices means that npower will be cheaper than British Gas for the average dual fuel customer.
As well as cutting prices we have decided for the next two months to waive cancellation fees for customers on fixed price contracts who may now want to move to a cheaper npower tariff - although the longer term outlook cannot be predicted, so existing fixed price deals may still be an attractive option."
Price cut: 5% cut across both primary block and follow on rate - all customers get the benefit regardless of level of usage
£38 average price reduction: Based on Ofgem standard annual consumption of 16,500 kWh for gas, based on prices averaged across Britain and across the 3 payment methods (Direct Debit, Receipt of Bill and Prepayment) and includes VAT.
Cheaper than British Gas across all payment methods for dual fuel based on Ofgem standard average annual consumption of 16,500kWh gas and 3300kwh electricity. Prices averaged across Britain and include VAT.
Our standard tariff is cheaper than British Gas’s standard tariff for the average dual fuel Direct Debit Customer: Assumes average annual consumption of 3,300kWh standard electricity (5,000 kWh Economy 7, 55% of this at night) and 16,500kWh gas paying by Direct Debit, comparing npower’s Standard gas and electricity tariffs with British Gas’s Standard gas and electricity. Includes British Gas dual fuel and Direct Debit discount and npower's annual dual fuel Direct Debit discount and VAT at the reduced rate of 5%. Excludes restricted hours tariffs. Also excludes any prompt payment discounts, internet, fixed or capped tariffs. British Gas’s monthly Direct Debit discount varies according to seasonal consumption. Prices correct as at 01/02/2012.
