During 2003 we worked on the construction of Causeymire, a 48MW wind farm in Scotland which will be one of the most powerful onshore wind energy projects in the UK. We also gained planning consent for a new 20.8MW project in South Wales.
We have been successful in our bids for two new sites: one off the North Wales coast close to North Hoyle and the other in the Wash. The site in the Wash, known as Triton Knoll Offshore Wind Farm, is the largest proposed offshore wind farm site in the world, with a potential capacity of 900–1200MW.
In 2003 several hydro sites across the UK were in the planning process while construction began at two new sites in Scotland – Braevallich (2.19MW) and Garrogie (2.3MW).
Stanley Mills began operating in its reliability phase (840kW) in autumn 2003.
We have undertaken trials of wood co-firing at our coal-fired power stations – Didcot, Tilbury and Aberthaw. At Aberthaw we have started trials to directly burn biomass in the boiler.
